After a 3-year postponement owing to Covid the Metropolitan Museum in New York last year finally managed to put on a major exhibition of early Buddhist art from India called Tree & Serpent, which focuses on the stūpa and its adornment.
The exhibition was curated by John Guy, one of the leading experts in this field, and gathered together works from India and museums around the world to put on one of the finest exhibitions of its kind ever seen in the west.
I was not able to get to New York, but a friend of mine who works at Harvard, Malsyaian-born Leow Chai Yee was, and she took photographs of many of the works that were on exhibit.
I have now edited, labelled and organised those photographs and publish it as a new album on the Photo Dharma website as part of the Indian collection.
Also on the same page I have included extracts from the catalogue accompanying the exhibition, and a video that was recorded in which John Guy and Donald S Lopez introduce the works on display.
