The Sinhalese Cemetery in Kuala Lumpur

Posted on December 5, 2010April 10, 2011 by Ānandajoti

Recently I had a short stay in Kuala Lumpur to arrange for my visa for Myanmar, and I took the opportunity to do some more photography while I was there.

The first place I visited was the Sinhalese Cemetery which now lies alongside the very busy Jalan Loke Yew which is part of the Cheras Highway.

Amongst the luminaries who are buried there are AA Gelis de Alwis and his wife Yap Lok Yew, who were both very active supporters the Sangha in Malaysia, with the husband founding the first Sinhalese temple in the country (Bodhi Lankarama in Taiping) and his wife founding the first Thai temple in K.L., which was named after her as Wat Mei Lew.

There used to be a catafalque there also, which was built by de Alwis’ son Edward, so that the monks would have somewhere to do the chanting while the body was lying in state, but it had to be removed eventually as drug addicts were using it as a hang out.

For the high-definition files, slideshow and more photographs please see the SOURCE.

There will be more photographs from the Royal Wat Chetawan next week.
