The Great Compassion Mantra Of Avalokitesvara

Posted on July 2, 2011April 23, 2012 by Ānandajoti

This is a wonderful rendition of the third Great Compassion Mantra as found in the Chinese tradition with some beautiful images compiled by Michiko. The video seems to have been uploaded with the victims of the Japanese Tsunami in mind, and we all remember the people swept away unawares on that dreadful April morning – hoping that they have all found a good rebirth and can make further progress through this fearful saṁsāra.

As far as I have been able to find out this is the actual mantra that is being chanted:

namo ratna-trayāya
namaḥ ārya-jñāna-sāgara-vairocana-vyūha-rājāya
tathāgatāya arhate samyak-sambuddhaya
namaḥ sarva-tathāgatebyah arhatebyaḥ samyak-saṃbuddhebyaḥ
namaḥ ārya-avalokiteśvarāya bodhisattvāya mahāsattvāya mahākāruṇikāya

tad-yathā:

oṃ dhara dhara dhiri dhiri dhuru dhuru
iti vatte cale cale pracale pracale
kusume kusume vare ili mili citijvalamāpanāye
svāhā!

General Translation: 1. Adoration the noble Avalokitesvara, bodhisattva, the great compassionate one. 2. Having paid adoration to One who Dispels all Fears, O noble Avalokitesvara, to You adoration, O Nilakantha. 3. I shall enunciate the ‘heart’ dharani which ensures all purposes, is pure and invincible for all beings, and which purifies the path of existence. 4. Thus: Lord of Effulgence, the World-Transcending One. Come, come, great bodhisattva, descend, descend. Bear in mind my heart-dharani. Do do the work. Hold fast, oh Victor, oh Great Victor. Hold on, hold on, oh Lord of the Dharani. Move, move oh my immaculate image, come come. Destroy every poison. Quick, bear in mind, quick, quick, descend, descend. Being enlightened, being enlightened, enlighten me, enlighten me. Oh merciful Nilakantha appear unto me. To you who eyes us, hail. To the Great Siddha hail. To the Great Siddha in Yoga hail. To Nilakantha hail. To the Boar-feaced hail. 5. Adoration to the Triple Gem. Adoration to the noble Avalokitesvara bodhisattva, hail. “ – See more at: http://yogaforthenewworld.com/om-ratna-trayaya-mantra-homage-to-the-triple-gem/#sthash.laWm9mek.dpuf

Does anyone have a word-for-word translation for the second half?

    namo ratna-trayāya
Homage to the three jewels (the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha)

    namaḥ ārya-jñāna-sāgara
Homage to the great sea of wisdom

    vairocana
    To the Light-bringer

    -vyūha-rājāya
To the lord of hosts (the lord of reincarnations)

    tathāgatāya
The one who has done this before

    arhate
    The teacher

    samyak-sambuddhaya
    The completely awakened one

    namaḥ sarva-tathāgatebyah
Homage to the great one who has gone before

    arhatebyaḥ samyak-saṃbuddhebyaḥ
    To the great teacher

    namaḥ ārya-avalokiteśvarāya bodhisattvāya
Homage to the Great Avalokiteshvara (the one who looks down with compassion [on the world])-awakened being

    mahāsattvāya
    the great being

    mahākāruṇikāya
    the great compassionate one

    tad-yathā:
    Therefore:

oṃ dhara dhara dhiri dhiri dhuru dhuru
iti vatte cale cale pracale pracale
kusume kusume vare ili mili citijvalamāpanāye
    svāhā!

I haven’t found a good translation of this last part:

Oh, come with shaking and bowing, … the wisdom is within the flower, within the circumference of the flower (a lotus, presumably); go forth with this!

If anyone finds a word-for-word translation of “dhara, dhiri, dhuru, iti vatte cale pracale” or “ili mili jitne dzola-napa naya showa” or other like transliterations, please share!

Thank you, and good luck searching-

Hi Lei Zhen Bang, the reason there is no translation of this last part is because it is a dhāraṇī and not anything grammatical that could be translated. It is true that certain of the sounds are homonyms with words in Sanskrit, like cale and kusume, but it is the sound quality, not any meaning that is being transmitted.

Indian people are by and large Hindu cum Buddhist. We may be Hindu by faith but Buddhists by heart and soul. This mantra is soul touching. Increases meditation level. Thanks for giving comments and interpretation of the mantra.
