Nina Paley on Overpopulation

Posted on December 20, 2010February 3, 2022 by Ānandajoti

Here are a couple of videos by Nina Paley looking at over population from different viewpoints.

The-Wit-and-Wisdom-of-CancerThe first, which is called The Wit and Wisdom of Cancer, is a 5-minute animation that draws parallels between human overpopulation and the propagation of cancer cells.

Independent of this film I have many times thought along similar lines as the way humans eat up their host, Mother Earth, has striking similarities to the way cancer eats up its host.

The-StorkThe second is not so much about the baby-boom as the baby-bomb. WIth storks flying overhead dropping pesky little babies all over the place.

Both of the films are saved by their humour, but Nina is serious about the problem and belongs to the Volontary Human Extinction Movement, which urges people not to reproduce (in a similarly humourous way).

Monastics have belonged to this movement, of course, since time immemorial (but without ever signing up).

We need more Nina Paleys, fewer mindless breeders at this very late date. A 2013 poll of 2,000 UN scientists, and an 11/5/19 poll of 11,000 world scientists reported in Bloomberg News showed them agreeing overpopulation by far the globe’s biggest problem, their words, “bigger than climate.”

Despite GNP per capita rising in every nation with declining birthrate since 1950, the consumer-driven media maintains a blackout on the subject.
Meanwhile, the UN reports animals raised for meat and dairy producing more greenhouse gas than all the world’s cars, trucks, buses, trains, planes, ships combined.

While every vetted international study concludes a plant-based vegan diet the best for health and disease prevention, this is also ignored. Meanwhile, until the general public embraces veganism, no health insurance, public or private, will ever be affordable.
