As I reported in March of this year we have been preparing image files of the Pali Commentaries from the Simon Hewavitarne Trust series for publication online, and I am happy to say that work is now finished, and for the first time the Sinhala version of the commentaries are freely available to a wider audience.
The SHB version of these texts, which were published beginning in the 1910s, marked in fact the first time the commentaries were available in print, but they are one of the last to made available online. They were printed owing to a bequest made by the brother of Anagārika Dharmapāla, Simon Hevawitarne and his widow Somavati Hevawitarne, who spent a large part of their fortune on this good work.
The commentaries now accompany the publication of the Buddha Jayanti Tripitaka Series which I published online a few years back, and I am hopeful that we may now be able to continue with publishing some of the ancillary works, like the grammars, chronicles and other literature from the vast store of Pali works still waiting to be made available.
